Introduction
The river kaveri which has it origin in coorg
District of karnataka is reserved and used for cultivation in kallannai which is commonly known as grand anicut


The grand anicut kallannai is reffered to the oldest dam that has been built during the period of chola king kari kallan over first century.it still stands for centuries safe guarding the people of region from floods

Need of kallannai


The flash floods which occurred in district of tanjore, capital of chola is root cause for the structure. During the period of chola king kavErAn they use rocks to reserve water from which the plan of building kallannai framed. 

They used rock knowm as "kal" in tamil language to construct a dam known as "anai" in tamil language, so the dam gets a name kallannai
